I have been asked to do a speaking / visual presentation on growing giant pumpkins at the Chicago flower & garden show March 20th. It will last 1hr... I am looking for Ideas on how to present it. I was also wondering if a slide or power point presentation has ever been made taking it from seed to pumpkin? This will be a great time to expose people to the hobby here in Chicagoland. I am open to all Ideas

george

hopefully there are some people on this site that are in and around the chicago area that could help you

there are also some very interesting grower diaries on this site

possibly you could talk to one of those people that posted their diary and get some input from them to attach to some or all of their diary pictures

hope this helps

Get a hold of Jim Beauchemin, He has done several presentations with good responses. He has done or going to do one at Cornell University.

on www.pumpkinnook.com they have a basic list that covers step by step from seed to pumpkin and have some very intersting pumpkin facts i would aslo go through the how to grow giant pumpkin books by don lanegevin and take info from there as well i've given beginner lessons before and if you've got pictures from your patch showing cold frames , pruning ,male vs:female flowers ,ect it helps

I think I will try to create a general power point presentation that all growers can use. Covering from seed to pumpkin to weigh-off. I will also hand out seeds and growing tips. If Don Langevin it out there... I will be willing to hand out post cards for your books too. Thanks for all the info so far.

George, I did a powerpoint presentation a couple years back and it turned out great. Don's books are great research tools and you can use alot of your own pictures. Powerpoint is the way to go. A couple weeks ago, I was approched by the local Hort. Club about doing a presentation for them this May. I will be using powerpoint and handing out seeds for anyone who wants to grow them. I guess people are getting pretty curious about the giant veggies displayed on my lawn each fall.

George,

I do a lot of PowerPoint presentations. try to keep the number of images to 30 or less. People are usually nodding off around slide 36 if the room is warm (unless I'm the presenter of course -LOL). To make quicker work of assembling the presentation, perhaps you can find a diary here that looks good & request the authors permission to "borrow" the images if the resolution of the originals is adequate.

Beware though that emailing good images is a challenge for some servers. Mailing a CD is mush easier.

I have all winter to play around with this thing. I have no digital pictures of my own. I just bought a digital camera... If some one has pictures or diary entries I could use, I will try to put something togather for all to have. If this has been done already, I would like to have a copy

you can use any pics from my Growers Diaries if you want. I have lots of pictures throughout the season that haven't been posted in my diary. If you email me what you are interested in, I'd be happy to look through my files and see what I can do. I have lots of time on my hands right now (still on winter break from college).

You can have my pics too (growing on the roof). I also made a short movie of one week growth in may...
My colleagues at university made an excellent 3D microscopic pic of AG xylem and they should present it soon on their web page... I will send the link when they do.

George, I have a lot of AG related pictures from my own plants in good original resolution (full screen) showing the basic steps, "understanding the plant" etc. for my own presentation in german (e-book, Flash, interactive CD-ROM). Feel free to contact me if you want them. I would check with your email provider first what size of file attachment is allowed.

I took a picture everyday of my pumpkin from the same spot. I started out at one angle then once it got growing moved back a distance to finish it out. If you look at my diary you can see some of the pictures. Feel free to drop me an E-mail if youd like to chat.

george,

you are more than free to use any of my pics or info in my
diary. i do have pics of my 885 est off the 1301.5 eaton
that has pictures taken from the same location from
its blossum pic to final size. there are some good
pics of my dill ring to show a slide with things to watch
out for potential splits.

i would be glad to meet up with you beforehand if you
want to bounce around some ideas or need someone to
practice the presentation in front of. every junior and
senior level college classes i took required a presentation,
so i do have some experience doing them, eventhough that
was many moons ago.

just send me an email if you want or need some help.
i'd be happy to help in anyway i can.

Yeah, that will be great Shazzy. When I get it together, I would like to get all the local growers thoughts on it. I can have a viewing party, with a few cocktails everyone is invited

Steve, FYI, at my Master Gardner Meetings the vast majority of fellow MGs could have cared less about the giants. :(
It seems, giant pumpkins don't attrack enough butterflies or have a high enough social status for most. Then again, it also helped separate the true thinkers(disclaimer: not that you have to be interested in giant pumpkins to be a "true thinker," but I have found most "true thinkers" can appreciate many different "fields"...pun intended) from the wallflowers. I know this doesn't help much, but it may better prepare you if your findings are similar to mine, BF

Giant Pumpkins are soooo politically incorrect! LOL
No Butterflies hoo-hoo. Maybe they're just smart enough to stay out of the Warrior!

At the risk of offending anyone. *Many* of the MGs I meet are armchair warriors with no formal education or practical experience in the field of angonomy, horticulture or the agrisciences.

I prefer the brown dirt humus rich sois to overstuffed armchairs & glossy $50+ coffee table books.
