Who's planning on having mega huge patches next year or has one, or knows of having one. I plan on planting my seeds out of my 136 lbs out in an open spot in a forest. Hopefully the seed mold on them I can get rid of or won't effect them. Let me know how big some patches are. I'm going to count the number of seeds then I will let you know how many I'am planting this year!

Im planning on 6 plants right now. I have about 3 acres that is worked for planting, but i don't have time to grow any more than 6. The area for giants is around a half acre. The rest will be howdens, hubbards and gourds that will be donated to schools and kids from baseball and soccer. Steve

Um......If we figure aabout 600 sq ft per plant so as to include room for vine tending & spraying (kind of important), then 355 plants will require 4.9 acres.
You got some labor issues in the future Kyle! You got a market for all those pumpkins?

Yah I know about size of area I need. But I don't plan to grow them big. My dad isn't giving me a lot of space on his farm so I can only focus on three or four of my best plants in a small area, these plants I will grow big or at least aim for that. My 355 seeds I intend to plant I won't really take care of like what I will with the other ones. I plan to plant them probably most of them just seed right in the ground opposed to transplanting them. I plan to plant some around my dads farm by the river and ditches to keep weeds down. The rest I plan to make a mega patch In a forest next to my house. I won't plant them to be 600 sq ft per plant, they will just grow like farm pumpkins, Enough space so that they can grow and have aeration, but not comfortable space. The ground I found in the forest is slightly sloped and has a sparse population of trees with little to no growth on the bottom with out logs and fallen trees there.

Another thing about the seeds I have no record of their genetics. My biggest the 136lbs I have the most seeds out of so I refer to it the most. I got seeds from a garden shop called White Rose on Bankruptcy sale, for $2.49. They are called ATLANTIC GIANT PUMPKINS and on the picture the pumpkin was just as big as mine. So I don't know if there just a different small kind of AG or there they have heavy genetic potential. So I don't plan to sell them. You would be getting ripped off with bad genetics. The only genetics I have of the pumpkin is 136 Horlings x Self.
If I do pull this huge patch off I plan to sell my pumpkins to a local market or markets cheap. Don't think they will like them though big heavy pumpkins like that. There only really for show. But it will be fun to see 355 plants growing together. If I do do this I will post pictures. Maybe I can make a record. That would be fun.
Thanks for you input! Good Luck in 2005!

Forests have lots of animals and they will attempt to totally destroy your efforts...

Thanks guys! Hope this works it will be very cool if it works. And ya there will be animals in that forest but theres a lot of plants thats gonna be out there. I should get an anti deer spray. I think thats my biggest threat. Its not like a normal forest though it starts on the edge of the Holland Marsh Canal and only goes back 200 ft of a bit of swamp than a hill will a sparse amount of trees. Not very many animals on my side.
I plan to get lots of pictures, and make a lot of expiraments and see what goes good.
