A 801.5 Stelts just sold for $475 in an auction a few minutes ago. What would you pay for as seed in an auction that absolutely guaranteed you a 1500+ pounder and it was the only seed in the world that could make that guarantee? What do you think someone else (besides you) would pay for it in an auction?

Isn't there a large amt. of prize money offered for the first 1500 pounder? I would guess a very high bid for the speculated seed. If it doesn't get over 1500 lbs., what will the gaurantee reimburse?

For the sake of argument let's just say that it absolutely, positively is guaranteed to grow a 1500+ pounder.

I don't know if the 1500 lb gaurantee would be worth anything, you take away the challenge, is it worth playing the game. Eddy

well, being that there is usually a $10,000 or so prize for growing the new world-record, plus at least 1,000 dollars for the top prize at the weighoff, minimum, and, some of the weighoffs wayyyy out west pay $5 a pound for the first-prize winner, so geez, that's $7500, i would say that if a grower bought a seed for $15,500, and selected the right weighoff and won it, he would still be making $2000 to begin with, minus the costs of transporting it and the cost of growing it, we'll say $1000... so we'd be back to square one, basically. but, that's how much one would pay for such a seed. if he or she were Rich. or Suzie.

by the weigh, that would only work if his pumpkin was the new world record.
by the weigh, the $100,000 prize that was to be awarded to the first 1500-pound pumpkin's grower from P and P seed is no longer a reality. i've never heard of any other offers, fill me in! it is no longer an unusual thing to see pumpkin weight approaching prize weight. maybe like 5 or 6 years ago it would have still been in effect. sort of like being fired a few days before your pension, i guess....

unfortunately there is no such thing as a guarentee in this hobby if there was many of us would be local ,state and possibly world champions several times over a hot seed stock is nothing more than a seed that others have had success with and for a variaty of reasons becomes very desirable how it preformed in one patch can be all together different in another how your growing skills have evolved also go a long way toward achiveing maximum results from any seed you could give a veteran grower and say a fairly new grower the same 801.5 seed, and quite possibly never see the same shape, color,or most importantly weight ( dont laugh but in many cases the fairly new grower could still win )
my point is i approve of auctions ,i approved of seed swaps and i approve of giving seeds if i have them, but no seed comes with a guarentee , just an edge going into the season

Are you guys for real or just having a little winter fun? There is no way on this green earth that anyone can predict what any seed will grow or even that it will germinate. A proven seed, one that has grown some really big pumpkins such as the 723 Bobier, increases your chance of growing a big pumpkin. It doesn't guarantee it. The persons paying big bucks for a seed is simply increasing their chances but not guaranteeing anything. I have personally grown really great seeds, worked hard and ended up with nothing to speak of. But, at least they germinated.

Lets say you won first last year with a 1200lber out west...at 5 dollars a pound thats 6,000 bucks. You rent it out to a casino for 1000 for a couple weeks or sell it for a couple thousand with the seeds returned....so thats 7-8? 000 dollars.....whats 500 bucks for a proven rare seed that goes bright orange often (more saleable) and perhaps gives you a better shot at a biggie than average? Having the 801.5 stelts (an example) in your seed cross adds to the curb appeal of the seed which helps your pkn growing club fund itself through the occaisional seed sale/auction (which feeds your ego as you become "the man"). Too take 1/15th of your "winnings" and reinvest into a good start with a proven great seed is a smart thing. You cannot have it both ways guys...if its a hobby like you always say then it cant become all "household funds" when you win.

"sort of like being fired a few days before your pension". Easy to say if it's not your money! Hey! We gave out a lot of prize money over the years. Just on recall: $53,000 to Zehr's for 1061 WR. Bill Bobier $10,000 & Joe Pukos $25,000 for winning at Clarence. And a lot more. You never know about that $100,000 and whats down the road. Can you imagine a 2,000 lber? That should be a $1,000,000 prize! Get working on that and please keep me updated.
Updates are now done to www.atlanticgiant.com for 2005. No guarantees on that 1500 lber. but some good seeds! Thinking about a $1,000 prize for new WR Long Gourd and others. Details will be forthcoming in our broadcast email Newsletter. Ray Waterman
