Not to highjack Owens thread, this is another question I´d like to hear about from other growers for 2005. I´ll go with 2 plants again, x-mas, 600 sqft each, and a pollinator plant somewhere else in the garden. It all depends on the limited space I have though it looks there´s a tendency to go with smaller patches (and plants) in general.

i am thinking i would LIKE to plant like 10 or 11 plants again this year, but this time the vines will be intensively buried, and the plant size will be limited to 500 square feet, and a lot more time will be put-into getting rid of weeds and/or just basically preventing them. and, i need a new philosophy on the number of fruit on each plant; ONE per plant, PLUS a shock absorber for genetics only, probably a selfer, and that's it. then, down to ONE that is 1500-plus, for the weighoff, of course. i mean, let's say i have these 10 plants. if the ones i have each have only ONE fruit on each of them, then EACH plant gets ONE chance to really put-out a monsterous fruit. if i have 5 plants, each with TWO pumpkins on it, then i may have more pumpkins, but not nearly as many MONSTEROUS ones. yeah, i know, like no kidding. but maybe i should plant a few MORE plants, limit the size of each one and rely on the increased care that they ALL receive this time around because of their smaller size but improved genetics. just rambling common knowledge, but it helps to talk it out.

I will run 32 plants in a 22,000 sf garden. This worked well for me last year. Most of the fruit that made the season where 600-976 lbs. I am hoping to start a new patch this year the same size to allow one patch to be worked and apply cover crops for a few season to improve the soil conditions. Todd

2 plants, 300 sq. ft. of good soil for each, then unlimited room to grow on hard packed clay. This is an improvement over last year's 10x10 garden with 4 plants growing all over the yard, and will hopefully be improved on again next fall, expanding to 1200 sq. ft. with 2 plants. I've got all the room I need to grow, I just don't have any dirt, it has to be trucked in.
