Need some assistance in acquiring some seeds/seed advice. I have had decent success with Burpee's Big Max and Thompson & Morgan Dill's AG but would like to step out this year with a seed offering more potential. The Dill's from Thompson/Morgan went about 80lbs with no maintenance to speak of.
Can I expect a 200 pounder from the Thompson/Morgan seeds with major TLC? What/where would be some other varieties for a relative beginner to start with?

Is there some reason that you are not asking us for seeds? I assure you, ours is far superior to any commercial seeds that are in the stores!

Don't use seeds from any seed companies or stores except Howard Dill and maybe Ray Waterman.
Most growers on this site are more than happy to send you some seeds with good genetics - by far superior to those that you grew. I'd say if you got 80lbs with the seeds you used and you use our seeds this year you will get at least 400lbs.
Are you interested in any of my crosses?
801.5 Stelts 97 X self (224kg) 801.5 Stelts 97 X 1016 Daletas 01 (214kg) 783 Daletas 00 X 801.5 Stelts 97 (182kg) 582 Hester 01 X 801.5 Stelts 97 (151kg) 845 Bobier 00 X 801.5 Stelts 97 (141.5kg) 810 Dill 99 X 1016 Daletas 01 (122kg) 1016 Daletas 01 X 801.5 Stelts 97 (100kg) 810 Dill 99 X 801.5 Stelts 97 (small)
It should be mentioned to newer growers that seeds from smaller fruits theoretically have the same potential as seeds from the 1000/+lbs pumpkins. The only thing that counts is the cross!
Pictures of all pumpkins can be found in my 2004 diary entries here on Bigpumpkins.com. All were an awesome orange color and should even improve with the crosses I made. The only one that was not as deeply orange was the fruit on the 1016 Daletas as the vine rotted off and the pumpkin wasn't able to mature and orange up.
If you are interested just send me an email.

Stan's right. There's so many seeds from people on this site that are much better than store bought seeds. I've done the store bought seed thing a few years ago and I'll never go back. Ask on this post and I'll bet you'll get several offers (e-mail me and I can set you up with some if you like) Alan

Thank you very much for your quick responses. Stan, I didn't realize I could get seeds here! (This is my first visit to this site) I am offically asking you for seeds!
Martin, I don't have the first clue about your crosses but if you think they'll work in Kentucky, i'm in (sending you an email shortly)
Sax, emailing you too. Thanks a million.

There are going to be some seed auctions on this site beginning this Saturday evening. There you will see offered the finest crosses on the planet! Of course, they will cost a pretty penny. You, as a new grower, will not need to start with these more expensive seeds. Growers who post on this site will be happy to send you seeds for "FREE"! Just post your name and address or send a private e-mail.

1320, you have hit the JACKPOT. i can assure you that Martin's crosses are of supreme interest to us all and of very high potential, and i am sure the others that have offered will hook you up nicely! just be sure to amend your soil with WELL-composted cow or horse manure as soon as you can, to be ready for spring.............and i hope you can spare at least 500 square feet for ONE of these plants, up to 750 max..................eric

1320, Welcome to the block. I bought my first AG seeds commercially too. As Tremor says, beware this Hobby can turn into a disease in a hurry. Is 1320 your goal this year?

Thank you all so much for your responses. I'm surprised to see how far reaching this site is and yes I must admit, I am addicted to growing pumpkins, glad to know I'm in good company here on this site.
I've emailed several of you, hope those went through. If not, anyone that can help me out with some seeds, please email me: [email protected]
I have several acres that I can plant and an unlimited supply of cow dookie. Didn't realize I'd need to dedicate that much space to one plant! WOW, but if that's what it takes, I'm in. Tired of growing little ones. Brooks, thank you for your address! Incoming mail Sir.
Pumpkinpal2 nailed it! My "other" patch is the dragstrip. May have to sell my ride to support the pumpkin habit?!

Hi 1320,
Welcome- there are lots of good seeds to go around if you want to look back through the seed exchange board:
http://www.bigpumpkins.com/MsgBoard/ViewBoard.asp?b=1
you can find people who have offered their 04 seeds. at the bottom of the page is a litte "next page" link so you can browse back in time. look for seeds ready, or seed avaible, etc ...
for example - this one of mine - http://www.bigpumpkins.com/MsgBoard/ViewThread.asp?b=1&p=98846
I still have seeds if you are interested. That goes for anyone else out there...
Also often times you can seed pictures of the Pumpkins in peoples Diaries here on BP. Also prior years are there.
for example you can see pictures of my pumpkins as they grew through out the year at this link:
http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryView.asp?season=2004&grower=3085&action=L
I thought i'd let you know because I was on the site for a year before I figured out what the diaries were all about! lol!

Thanks Gordon, I've spent the better part of two days in the diaries, good thing the boss is on vacation! Thanks for the advice. I may do a "Rookie" diary this year. I have noticed several "tricks" in the photos that make no sense to me yet, but I will learn. Glad you mentioned the seed exchange, hadn't seen that yet!

1320 You may find it a help to obtain the 3 Books that are available from Don Langevin, How To Grow World Class Giant Pumpkins. There are links on this Website Home Page that will take you to the right place to buy. There are also some Growers and Growers Groups that have very interesting and easy to comprehend information on their Websites relating to getting into the Hobby/Sport of growing Giant Pumpkins. If you use the 'Links' section in the left hand menue on the Home Page you will find so much information you will need a week to get through it all. Good Luck and Welcome to Giant Pumpkin Growing.

it is funny this 1320 thing...i'm glad i hit it, just the first thing i thought of when i saw the #s. i have always "likened" pumpkin-growing to drag racing;
the track is the patch. the engine (power PLANT, lol) is the seed. the TOP FUEL is the fertilizer. the tires are the pumpkins. (and, there's a little one in-between,lol) the driver is the grower. the weather is, well, the weather. and the finish line is, of course, the weighoff.
korney at first, maybe, but it all makes a good analogy for me! by the weigh, a smoked tire is a blown-up pumpkin, etc...eg

LMAO! I'm wondering how many races I'll miss next year as a result of tending the other "track".
Ordered all three of Langevins books yesterday, I've taken the plunge. I am motivated by the diaries, just too cool. You guys have been awful nice, many thanks.
A TF dragster can run quicker in the 1/4 mile than I can run mine in the 1/8th mile....look for any of my pumpkins to be named after drag racing!
