I have been taking advantage of the "extended" fall here in northeast Ohio-- I just got a load of ~year old horse manure. My question is, is there a problem with the fact that the bedding that is used for the horses is pine shavings? Will they affect the pH at all, and in which direction? Thanks!

Kurt,
You might check on this web page for more information
regarding the effect of pine shavings.

Thanks randy- maybe I should add some lime. I just dug a hole 5 x 5 x 3feet deep, in short sleeves, on December 5! Wow! Planning on filling it with mushroom compost, horse manure, leaf humus, and maybe some kelp meal and organic fertilizer. Should I use any of the clay, or get a load of topsoil?

that load of topsoil isn't a bad idea mix in your clay type soil as well great soil doesn't come overnight it takes a lot of work to get it close to ideal before you add lime i'ld do a soil test to find out what and how much to add

Kurt, most of your pumpkin roots will be in the top 10 inches of soil. I think you would get better results if you prepared 75 Square feet 1 foot deep rather than 25 Square feet 3 feet deep.
