What does it mean when the seed coat is split down the side of the seed?

As seeds dry they seem to contract. The tan seeds will often crack or split. While I don't think these will last as long in storage, these seeds also seem to absorb water more readily & don't require filing to enhance germination. In other words, they should be just fine.

About half of the seeds out of my 721.5 split on the face of the seed. Will they be ok?

I never had problems with cracked seeds. Maybe you put a small piece of tape to "seal" the crack if you want to be sure nothing gets in (what should not happen if the seeds are properly stored). Right now I´m using a cigar box (humidor) stored in the fridge to keep my seeds, works good.

Never had any problems with those cracked seeds. Most of them germinate even faster than the normal ones as moisture can get in easier.
Why are most growers filing the seeds or even removing the seed coat?!
The 996 Emmons 00 had the cracked seeds and it was my fastest so far to come up in less than two days!

I file them because I am afraid a leaf will force itself out of the split as it could be the line of least resistance and then get mangled up in the process.

hmmmm, hadn't thought of that. sort of like a cut in a tractor tire that has a tube in it....
my thought is that the seed-leaves grow more
in a longitudinal fashion rather than outward like the wings of a bird taking off. this could be why the seed coat
seems to be pushed away from the radicle, or root-end of the seed. i always keep those tweezers handy, though!
and, a pair of the kind that are normally-closed, so that when you squeeze them, they open. teamwork! eric
