My old barn has about 200 - 250 old bales of straw and hay, left from the previous owner. Most are busted, but I would like to start using them for mulch around the pumpkins. During the growing season, how thick should I put the straw down to prevent weeds from coming thru? Should I worry a lot about weed seeds from the straw/hay for the current of following seasons?
I also noticed that I have a lot of unwanted piles of raccoon and opossum "droppings" in the hay loft. Could this be used on the patch as well?...Tom

if you put on 18" in the fall it should settle to about 3-6" Ruth Stout was one of the first to do intense mulching, you should try to read some of her books for more information. Tom
