Ben,

You are wrong. My six year old was with me every step of the way this fall. He was on the tractor with me as we tilled, moved manure, spread gypsum, etc... He also help plant the cover crop which we spread by hand. As for caring for the plant in 04; he transplanted it, pruned, buried, sprayed (other than seven), pollinated it and measured it (with help when it got bigger). One morning I decided to prune something on it since I was out there and saw a need....He cried because I did something to his plant. We did share the water set-up and timing system, which he helped me set up, though. So, I'd say he certainly qualifies as a grower. I know spouses who are growers who let the other do all the patch prep in the fall. Sure, I helped him along the way by teaching him where to prune, etc. He helped me also by taking care of some issues with my plants and by making sure the water was going when I was gone for a couple of days.

My 4 year old this year had his own plant, but he basically did nothing but call it his. We did not do any work to the plant at all, but he did help occasionally with mine. He will care for his own in a year or two becuse he likes being out in the patch with big brother and daddy. Great family time! Ben, I'd put Kael up against you next year...lol.

Please be careful with children & tractors. A father & son were tracot tilling in Newtown CT a couple years back. I'm not going to be very colorful in my desription of the events. But the former-father is in now institutionalized after not recovering from what he caused/witnessed.

Please don't have children on laps on any tractor with working implements.

On a positive note: Stephen does shovel shi* (within reason), selects seeds with scarey precision, rakes, starts seeds, plants his start, weeds, & pinches tendrils/tertiaries & unwanted flowers with deft precision.

I draw the line with pesticide spraying & tilling. His personal bests are 194 official & 220 EST with no pesticides applied at all. Needless to say, none of the pesticide free plants have finished the season alive. But they did manage to get a solid fruit to the Durham Fair in 2003.

I stand corrected.

When we lived in Maryland, I used to love riding on the tractor with my dad. Not that I remember it.

My 18 month old daughter loved to pull off the female flowers this summer, usually on ones I was going to pollinate.

I have been moving manure, pulling weeds, watering since I was 4 or 5. I use a shovel to turn the soil. I use to take my wagon down to the farmers house and haul all the manure home to use in my gardens.I had very little help, because I always wanted to do things myself. The words of encouragemeant that came from my Grandfather and my mother when it came to garden work kept me out there trying to have a better garden. Now at 50 Im still out there doing what needs to be done. I plan on when my Grandkids get big enough to walk to teach them what I , my grandfather and I did in our gardens. He love nature and this taught that me the same love he had for growing things. I really believe when young ones are are there learning from you they will always have that garden bug in them.
