As well as wishing each other Merry Christmas & Happy New Year lets all prey for the families and victims, 23,500 dead at the time of typing this, of the Tsunami that has hit the Countries and Islands of South East Asia.

Its unbelievable how the count keeps rising. The first report I heard said over a hundred, then 1,100, and last night the news said 11,000.
And now they are saying the quake was 9.0??????
I have been through some crazy quakes, but 9.0 I can not even fathom. A 6.7 in '94 had me literally bouncing off the floor and put 25 gallons of fishtank water on my ceiling.
9.0!!! It must have been awful.

The main-stream media news has really been asleep at the switch for this event. Possibly the most powerful earthquake of our time & the day after the biggest concern in the news was for the 850,000 Emporer Penguins living near Tasmania. I was dumbfounded to think Tsunamis were of no concern, but what do I know of these things?
Well....like you said, God help the survivors & rescuers. God Bless the families of those not so fortunate. God Rest the rest.

Now 22,000 lives lost according to MyWay.

This is an amazing & awful event not soon to be forgotten. Mother has a way of making our own self inflicted catastrophes look pretty minor compared to what she *can* do.

when you hear of things like this it really puts pumpkin policies and politics in their place

on a scale of one to ten pumpkins are a one while the destruction and pain these people face would surpass a ten

god be with the survivors and the families of the lost

50,000 and counting. Places where many people from over here like to spend the christmas holidays, so up to 1000 tourists also died till now. Horrible.

Yes sad, some could have been warned to seek high ground.
The tusunami center in Hawaii only had telephones to use when the earthquake hit to warn of the wave.
There was time.
Im not sure why the media didnt jump on the warning.

Note that we were more shocked when 3000 died at the hands of Man than 10+ times that number at the hands of Mother.

What a horrible tragedy. It's really hard to even comprehend how many lives have been lost.

Is it just me, or when you watch the video footage, the waves dont really look that bad? I mean, obviously water forces are deceivingly powerful, but it just doesnt seem like there should have been such destruction.
The footage of Malaysia looks scary, maybe because it was filmed at ground level.

Just returned from our local gas station where the owner told me 2 families I know living down my road are victims. 4 adults, 5 children. They had 2nd floor hotel rooms near a beach in Thailand when the flood wave came in with nearly 500 mph. The whole area was erased in seconds.
55,000 victims now, more than 40,000 people missing. Could be 100,000 by Jan 1st.
If you´re not hooked on fireworks this week, it would be a good idea to donate some money for help. My wife and me we already did. God bless the countless victims.

Fadedavid, remember that any other video footage than the one you saw could only be done by people being dead now.

My fiance' lives in Indonesia and she was in Jakarta when the quake hit. Wasn't severe there and thank the Lord she was protected by other land areas so the tsunamis went other directions. Scary stuff. All of the victims and there families will be in our prayers. Jimmy

one other sad note, if you don't know the asian culture in these areas, most countries have almost "zero" knowledge of safety compared to the West. The culture just has no concept of it for some reason. That is my best guess as to why no warnings were ever given in so many countries, and even if warnings were given out, no organized way to get out the warning. Unfortunately many lives could have been saved if the cultures were different. Jimmy

Good point Floh, and good to hear your fiance is well Jim- I forgot thats where she was.

Also, it looks like that link that Tremor posted has more footage, including the Maylasia I mentioned.

The internet would have helped...
total webpage over-ride. or sumtin...

The "HAMS" of New York were the only reliable communication on sept 11 2001.

In the Pacific ocean they have bouy networks and eyes in the sky to track and update civil defence centers.

It does raise the question of who knew what when, and who was on holiday.
That area is earth quake "prone" and has had some nasty
volcano eruptions(krakatoa).
What is the "update" status of Civil Defence,(aka,,homeland seq.?) here in the USA now?

Just amazing, the death toll is now over 50,000 and will probably hit 100,000 when its all over. Very sad.

100,000 current estimate. Hideous.

It´s not even possible to identify the victims. They need DNA analysis or a wedding ring to do it.
The same planes bringing the tourists over there now come back with 1,000 or more dead bodies, just counting the victims from my own country. 2,000 from Scandinavia as I heard. 100,000 current estimate might not be the last number to see.

Sadly, I wouldn't be surprised to see it go over 150,000 by the end.
