he gets it delivered for free too? They want like 20 bucks a yard for compost here at a compost place.

Hey Ben,
Maybe try an ad in the newspaper? Farmers are always more than happy to get rid of that stuff. Sometimes the'll even load it for ya. It's also usually a better quality too, minus all the pea gravel, wood chips, and clay they put in the commercial stuff to make it go farther. That's just been my experience.

That's right been. Most farmers are happy to give you a load of manure, usually no charge. I got several dairy farmers just a few miles down the road from me. Getting to know them pretty good....lol. Good luck. Mike

Over here 1 cub yard compost is 10 bucks. Manure is a problem most of the time because it´s mixed with straw which I don´t like to have in the patch.

why no straw? I add additional straw to my patch and I like to get manure with a good amount of straw in it....

Straw will decompose very slowly if not shredded. It also tends to clog the tiller. So I can´t see any use for straw in the soil. When I was young I worked on a horse farm and we always had to seperate the manure from the straw.

By the way - anyone who has a chance to work in his patch like Mike is a lucky guy...no bobcat will ever make it to my backyard...so the wheelbarrow has to do it :)

About half of my patch was built over straw bales here at home three years ago and the straw is still not composted
yet. I would agree that if it could be shredded and mixed well with other compost or manure that it is probably not bad to have in the patch.

Check with your county agricultural extension agencies or landfills! I found a "mountain" of between 2000-3000 yards of 3-4 year old composted leaves and yard waste for "FREE". I had to contract with a trucking company to haul. Cost me $3/yard to truck. I get to spread it using a friends bobcat! :)

So John, you´re a lucky guy too...

If you can see the straw in your manure it means it is fairly fresh out of the barn put it in a heap for a few weeks and it will soon compost and disappear.

If you can ask for year or better 2 years old manure and all problems with straw and oats are solved.

I wasn't talking about manure. I got 20 yards of that delivered for free. I'm talking about that compost!

I get Compost and manure free but I do have to pay for trucking which is at a very reasonable price. I had the ground chisle plowed a month or so ago to a depth of 2' and we spread everything out Friday morning with the bobcat. In the spring I plan to bring in a 3 bottom plow to turn it all over and then bring in a garden tractor with a hydrolic tiller to do the first tilling. From that point on I will be using just my hand tiller.

Weeds are the price one has to pay when growng AG's! You're still young Dave...it's "no sweat" for you to bend over and pluck them up!
I spray my uncovered areas of the patch with Round-Up just before I take the hoop houses covers off the plants in mid-June. By mid-July, the weeds are once again growing at "full speed"! By the end of August, I "throw in the towel"!
