What are the advantages or dis-advantages of planting a seed from a selfed pollination. I have received a couple seeds that seem to be from good genetics but from a self pollination. I am not really sure if I want to plant these or not. Anybody who may have tried this or have advice I would like to hear. Thanks John

If you like the characteristics of a certain pumpkin that you have seen and can't get the seed that produced it a selfed seed is probably the best choice. Sibbed should be just as good, some will say even better. I can see no disadvantages of planting a selfed seed.

self's will give you a more narrow genetics of the particular seed you planted (such as what color your pumpkin was, etc). A sib will give you more general characteristics of this seed over all since the cross was with a another plant from the same seed. Both seem to work well in many seeds. 950 boyton, 735 pukos, to name a couple of good selfs. Jimmy

... shameless plug for my own seeds ...
my 891 Tanner 04 is a (735 Pukos x self) so it is a 2nd generation selfed seed. I think it would be a great seed to plant.
if anyone is interested in one, or any of my other seeds, (I still have some left) - just got to this page:
