first time grower can some body tell you what people mean about covering the vine and when and where abouts on the vine it should be done. ta

Darky, Most people cover their vines with soil or manure as soon as they begin to run. By doing this it encourages growth of tap roots, which will give your plant more nutrients. However be careful not to cover flowers or secondary vines shorter than a foot. John

I'll tell you how I bury mine. Once the plant starts growing well I trench in the direction I want my main & 2ndarys to go in. Then as they grow they fall in the trench & when the leaves & flowers have risen high enough I backfill in the trench leaving only the leaves & flowers exposed...........Paul

Darky,
By covering your vines, the plant will feed over the entire area, instead of just the "stump" and the taproots that do penetrate the soil. This process also deters certain catastrophic insects (like the squash vine borer), from entering the plant. One more thing, it will also protect the plant in high winds.
