I've heard ranges of 6.2 - 7.4 throwing biggies. But I'm sure there are greater extremes.
Henry's hole has some interesting stories.
Outside "ideal range" pH doesn't mean nutrients aren't available. It merely alters their availability to the plant. So if all the minimum nutrient levels are still met, the fruit won't know the difference.
Turn a blind eye to soil testing then? No way. But don't lose sleep over less than perfection either.

I believe 7.0 is optimal, and Gordon is rare bird to get that high of a ph to set a pumpkin, let alone grow one in it! Nice work Mr Tanner, now lets hope that is the only thing from Utah that does will on Jan 1!! GO PITT!!!
I believe I feel a seed bet coming on..

Rocky,
It would be worse that taking candy from a baby.
UTAH, BCS #6, 11-0, vs. "the pits" BCS #23, 8-3.
Utah averages nearly 50 points per game (typically with its 1st string players on the bench during the second half). Utah runs complex multi-facetted offence headed by Heisman trophy finalist Alex Smith. Utah easily beat BCS #20 Texas A&M 41-21 this year.
Pitt won the conference because Miami and VT left the conference, B.C. lost, a back door opened and they some how snuck in. Even with a whole month to try to come up with a defensive plan, Pitt won't have an answer for Utah’s offence. Pitt lost to Connecticut and almost lost to Furman. YES the powerhouse Ferman! Where is Furman anyway?
From ESPN story: “The Fiesta Bowl gladly invited BCS-buster Utah on Sunday and had no choice but to accept Big East champion Pittsburgh as the unbeaten Utes' opponent.”
Pitt making it to a BCS bowl and Cal not is one of the main reasons people think that the BCS needs fixing.
