Well, I have heard people getting their compost from various "unusual" places. I think Brett Hester used "mint compost" from a local source. I was hoping we could start a list here so that we could all better tap in to some of the "unknown" sources of compost and amendments. Free is always best, but if it has a price, please post.

composted leaves! for free on my own property, was the best resource I could find. Also if you have a cousin that owns a farm that has horses and cows, that always helps too. Heck I even had help loading in onto the truck and trailer with a skidster at my cousins house. Then the horse stuff came from a friend of my brothers, she had a nice big pile of aged horse fertilizer and sawdust ready for the trailer. Only bad part about all of this is we had to load it all, the best part again was it kept the weight down this Fall, LOL!

I live in a gentrified suburb where rich people pay professional yard services to coif their lawns. In fall I call them and ask them to bring me leaves. They come in one-ton dump trucks. It's really good compost, mostly leaves, a little grass clippings, and raked dirt and mulch from the garden beds. It cooks hot, and fast, but doesn't stink because it is mostly brown. So far this year I've gotten 9 tons for free, delivered to my property. The upshot for the yard service is that they pay a $35/ton tipping fee to get rid of it, so I save them a dime.
