Are there types of molasses that are better or worse than others to use on the garden?
The type of molasses we have in Cheyenne according to the lable is made from soybeans.

John,
Black strap is a byproduct of the sugar industry. It is recommended a lot because it is cheap, contains no preservatives & is high in potash. I've also heard of Beet molasses being used. I wouldn't think that Soybeans wouldn't have enough sugar in it but I could be wrong.
At any rate, the main reason for using Black Strap Molasses is because it is unsulfonated. Check that this Soybean molasses contains no preservatives of any kind since the breakdown of sugar by bacteria is the fire we are TRYING to start.

yep on the molasses --cane or sugar beet is be used to make molasses--to super charge the ground make bacteria have babys --giving the soil power to relese tighted up micnuts and makeing a health balace fast uptake and small particals for hair roots to go to very quickly----i have never heard of soy being used to make molasses--but might be used as additive as protein which wont hurt the soil--would help as far as i can see---I carry molasses if no can find it---c&jproducts inc-----craig

I use the stuff from the farm supply store, co-op, farmers exchange, whatever they call it your town. They sell it as a feed addative, but many buy it this time of year to put out for deer. $9 and some change a gallon. It is preserved with propionic acid however. The checking Ive done says its a mold inhibator that when diluted 1:50 or 1:100 has very little effect on the life in your soil or compost.

Problem Solved!
One of the other Cheyenne growers spent some time on the phone quizzing the owner of the feed store where we bought the molasses. It was finally determined that we actually have molasses made from sugar beets. The molasses is sold in recycled containers, which carry all the other information about soybeans etc.
I received a number of helpful e-mails. Thanks.
