Lots of aged manure and compost, you need the organic matter.

Do what has been suggested and what I did: lots of OM.
It was the only thing that helped.

what about greensand? I've read that's good to add when clay is involved, but i'm not sure why i have no firsthand knowledge of it, im curious as well because i hit clay between six and 18 inches down.

I read a farm report on a site the other night that for come reason, gypsum works much more better in the Eastern USA then the western part of the USA. Plus you have to watch the Sulfur in the gypsum over the years as it will go higher.

I have very heavy clay soil and I have been adding lots of well composted manure and muchroom compost over the last couple of years. I have added 80-100 Tons Manure and 40-50 Tons mushroom compost. My total patch area is about 10,000 ft2. I am planning to add an aditional 100 tons this fall of well composted manure and am looking at adding about 35-40 tons of concrete sand as well. I am adding all this stuff gradually ad deep plowing it in so it will be well blended with the clay. The objective is to build up the surface layer while inproveing the soil structure. Be very carefull of soil compaction. Clay soils can be easily damaged when wet.
