We are getting ready to till in our cover crop around March 1st. With Favas, do you cut the stalks down and then till everything in? Will the stalks be composted by our April 20th plant date? We also have some clover and winter rye too. We are new to cover crops. Thanks for the help!

Sometime with a cover crop it is beneficial to cut and leave it on the surface to dry. This decreases the nitrogen and you will not loose so much organic matter. In Wisconsin our cover crop of Winter Rye never gets that big.

If you mow it or weed whip it first, it will till under much easier.... Consider holding off until at least May 1 to plant. April 20 is a bit too early for plants in the ground around here....
