Has anyone tried using preen on horse manure to keep all the seeds from sprouting? I can get all the horse manure I want, but I don't want to deal with all the weeds. Or if you haven't tried this what are your thoughts on doing this?

Thanks for any help.

Preen is trifluralin which is labeled for some agriculture uses including pumpkins & cukes. However it is a notorious "root pruner" at high rates. I would keep it well away from the mound (crown...stump....whatever) & restrict it's use to the paths & hardest to weed areas.

I doubt a world record was ever grown on a herbicide treated patch. But fine "fair grade fruit" & porch carvers are produced this way all the time.

It all depends on the growers personal goals.

Thanks Tremor. Any idea how long this stuff stays active.

one note of caution. Do not use near plants you want for eating, this is not something you want in you body. If the seeds are of concern to you, you may want to use cow instead of horse. cows manure is broke down more than horse manure.

I don't know if it'll work on manure but try corn gluten (NOT corn meal.) It has pre-emergent herbicide properties (in other words, helps prevent weeds/seeds from sprouting.) Then you won't have to worry about it near food crops.

There 'aint nutten better than a bit of hoeing and a decent leaf, hay or straw mulch, in that order.
