My best pumpkin this year was grown from Dill Farms 500-700# seed packets. This kin hit 300- and was extremely ugly- cream colored with blue veins- and a cantaloupe like skin. My wife informed me that if i can't grow a nice orange one next year my hobby might me toast. So i have plenty of other seed options BUT i was curious if growing seeds from this ugly pumpkin would likely produce a similar outcome next year. Is pumpkin color purely genetic or is it more of a developmental/environmental issue? Many many thanks- John

I think we need to take this subject to the Howard Dill Orange Growing Forum.
We need to save your growing career.

And to answer your question...I think there is a small chance of growing orange from your current seeds. Not knowing the parentage of this pumpkin makes it really difficult to guess. Orange has come from ugly, but why take a chance if that is what you need.

John, There are hundreds of seeds out there being grown by bp.com people that will give you a pretty much guaranteed big orange pumpkin. I have several if you are interested. Look in my diary -- agteacher -- and you will see several that I grew this year. A SASBE will get you a lot of orange producing seeds. --Joe

Agteacher has lots of nice orange pumpkins. I could spare a couple seeds from my 1047.5.

Thanks agteacher and iowegian! I'm definitely interested in some better seeds - let me know what you would like for them. Definitely want real orange color and size potential. I learned my lesson this year- I can only manage two AG plants- three was just too much- weeds ruin my life!

Deal With It

You allow your wife to dictate whether or not you grow?
