This picture shows why it is so important to have a plant on a patch with great soil (which allows for rooting from many leaf nodes into the good soil), whereas a plant of the same size, which is sitting on a small spot of good soil, won´t be able to grow a really big pumpkin.

In my 2000sq/ft patch I added 18 blocks (11 lbs each) of coconut coir. Not enough for this patch in one year but a 2-3 year investment. It doesn't decompose so fast so lasts for years. I re-hydrated these blocks in the Spring with Ca Fe Mag and some kelp and water and tilled in. Great stuff. My root system was awesome. Use coconut coir if you can get it.
