Farming- a bunch of catastrophies that result in a lifestyle

I took this picture this morning. While every howden Ive ever grown started out green this guy is so far the only green one. Is this normal? He is 7 days old and has grown 15" in circumference since setting, with no signs of slowing down, averaging 5" a day. Will he stay green? Turn yellow like everyone else? http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=202986

Okay, I know nothing about the genetics involved here, but its on the vine with other little ones that are yellow? The last one I set on this plant was yellow and normal looking, it aborted in the 100+ temps....there are three more kins after this one that are all yellow. How can a squash grow in the middle of this vine? Pollination wise nothing snuck in there, she was closed off till the morning I pollinated and after wards, plus I picked the boys the night before.

The yellow ones may have been yellow cause they were aborting.Looks like a true squash-I wouldnt cut it off.

Are you talking Field Pumpkins or Atlantic Giants...Field Pumpkins are almost always green to start and finish up orange

Another point to make...Pollination only affects next years offspring. I could pollinate an Atlantic Giant with a hubbard squash and it would not look any different. Next years offspring Yes.

Okay, you have lost the new girl here....:} But Im super thankful for the replies.....however. ehem. This is a AG plant straight from the Dills people...um why would I want a squash??? WHAT is a true squash. I have so much to learn!!!!! How did I get a squash plant? Her leaves look like everyone elses?? Little-ton: I tilted her up last night on purpose- her sand got wet and I didn't want her sitting on it all day in the heat. I'm gonna drop her back down tonight, hopefully if her sand has dried out. Ooops, yup I cut the tap vine 3 away on both sides cause I din't want my PUMPKIN (feels like crying) *sniff* (squash) to be stressed. Can someone (cries a little more) explain how winding up with a frigging squash is good?

Green is a recessive trait and sometimes shows up in the pumpkins. A green pumpkin is called a sqaush.

So color dictates weather it is a pumpkin or a squash? Ive been doin some reading on the squash page.....sure seems to be lotsa arguing over color. Is this a good thing, having a pumpkin seed turn out to be recessive? Should I cut off all the males on her? I was planning on saving my seeds from this year....but if shes going to poison everything out there I can just cut off the boys? How can I find out what AG line she is from with this green gene? <- oh, that's good, green gene...

"and will remain green"....bad information. It MIGHT remain green but it may also turn orange. I've worked with several lines of pumpkin/squash crosses the past few years (trying to get a true green squash). Most of them start out green but by about day 30, have turned to lime green/yellow combinations.

Danged, and it looks so healthy too!! If it turns orange then its called a pumpkin...I've been reading the squash section but haven't run across the answer yet to "what makes it a pumpkin vs a squash"?

That sure looks like a squash to me. Its possible that the sed you grew was from a Pumpkin that had a contaminated pollination from a squash or it could just be a recessive gene. Either way it looks good and I would grow it. Squash can get just as big as AGs. Back in the old days the squash record was bigger than the AG record.

To clarify the pollination comment, The appearnce of your fruit is 100% dependant on the seed you planted. The polinating fruit will not affect how the fruit looks. The traits of the pollinating plant do not show up until the following generation. So the green in your fruit is from previous genes not from any pollin that snuck in this year.

Really Josh? I know field pumpkins real well, these big guys I'm learning still,,,,,but squash? The only experience I have with them is either grading them at market, or growing zukes in my garden. Lol. he gained only 3" last night, but another squash opened this morning behind him. This one that opened today I pollinated with males from their plant....the green giant got pollinated w two from himself and one from another dills plant...so that makes his seeds worthless right?

Limited knowledge here, but thinkin that awl pkns are actually of the squash variety...and come in varying colors!!! Some AG's are green, some a brilliant pkn orange!! The varieties vary a bunch, just like the weights do!!! LOL Maybe some research on zucchini's and field pkns...will reveal the truth??? are they both squash? Not sure but maybe? Peace, Wayne
