I'm sure this has been talked about before but,,,,, I live close to the beach and was wonder if seaweed fresh from the beach was ok??? Rinse it off, cut into small pieces and add to the patch in the fall???

Or maybe its just a bad idea.

if your willing to do the work ? why not? just wash off the salt water. personally? i think for all the work involved? id sooner buy a couple bags of kelp thats already been processed.

Chris, its worth it if you can get enough (bull kelp) and then make sure you get it washed signifcantly before incorporating it into your soil. We get enough rain that you can stockpile it in fall/winter and then till it in come spring time. After a good storm, sometimes areas of our coast are littered with bull kelp...alot of work when you can get the processed stuff, granular, ready to use in bags at a good price. We pay $50 for 55 lb bags...so I dont bother collecting it anymore...too much labour!!

Yea Glenn, we get a bunch that washes up this time of year. Its a nice 50 ft. hill and about 100 yards across the beach to get it. Then put the kelp in bags and drag them all the way back to the car. Lots of work for sure!

Tom sent me an email and like wait til next year says,,, i may try it on one plant and see how it goes...........

It's a good idea for those on a budget. People are willing to do most anything to save a buck. Good project for your kids. Gets them out in the open air instead of sitting in front of the tv playing video games!

I live by that water so its no big deal. I fill up a big Rubbermaid bucket. Iwash the stuff off and let it soak overnight.during the morning I rinse. It off again then apply it to the patch.I do this every day for two weeks before setting final ammendments down.

i put it up on screen panels from an old screen house wash out the salt and let it dry in the sun then i crush it up with a 2x4
