This is a question I never quite had an answer for until I came by this article by cntyrboy. How much will differ between sites and throughout the season due to wather. However, it is recommended that a 1 inch of water per week is a good starting point from which you will either learn to increase or decrease.

http://how2growags.blogspot.com/p/beginners-guide-to-growing-giant_892.html#How much to water |outline

The document explains it very well and there is an example at the very end of the document.

This is an example of the calculation applied to my patch.

For example each of my patches are say 500 square feet.
So, 500sq ft/43560 ft per acre = 0.011 acres.

Then, (0.011 acre x 2672 gal per acre)/7 days = 42 gallons per day.

Therefore for a plant covereing 500square feet I will need to water evenly over the patch by 42 gallons a day to reach 1 inch of water per week.

I am sure I watered less than this last year and hence a drip irrigation system will be used this year.

Thanks Cntyboy for the article.

You are welcome. You came up with the correct number but you typed the wrong amount for number of gallons per acre to equal 1 inch of water. It is 27,154 -- not 2672.

Remember, this is a good STARTING place. Different soil types will take different amounts of water. The soil should be moist but not wet. If it forms a ball that you can't break apart it's too wet. If it won't form a ball at all it's too dry.

lol, no worries.

I just wrote down and bookmarked what I found throughout the internet that made sense and was helpful for me, so I could refer to it later. My memory is not as sharp as it used to be.

With the tons of information out there and the amount of stuff that I have read, I found myself continually trying to remember where I read this or that, and trying to find it again was increasingly difficult. So I started putting my notes together in one spot.

I specifically wanted the formulas that I used over and over on a single sheet, which I printed out and hung it over my workbench where I mix stuff for easy reference.
