Are we supposed to keep track of the size of the leaves? In reading some recent posts and articles I am finding them being mentioned more and more.

This post confuses me. Are you attending a leaf weigh off?

Just kidding, huge bloated leaves can mean too much nitrogen.

Size of leaves means nothing to me...some are huge, some are small, some are tall, some are short.

Its the number of leaves (total per vine x number of vines)that is more important in the long run.

I was told once by a wise older grower that each leaf can mean 2-5 lbs growth to the pumpkin. So a plant with 100 leaves should grow a pumpkin from 200-500 lbs.....

My largest plant has 8 secondaries on each side with 18 leaves per vine = 16 x 18 = 288 leaves plus the main vine.

I do not think it matters regarding the size of the kin but these plants are so cool sometimes its neet to see how big they can get. The size of the stem or stump does not always relate to a bigger kin either but people like to keep track.

The total surface exposed to sunlight probably has more effect on growth. So a bunch of small leaves should do as much photosynthesis as a few large ones.
