I recieved a phone call from a grower today who had a blossom end split that they filled with plumbers putty almost a week ago and the pumpkin is still growing and the plant looks healthy and the crack has stopped. how long could it last before it crashes and goes to a pile of mush. i look forward to other growers input.

Not very long. It is probably already a swimming pool inside there. It's best to move them out while they are still very solid. In a few days they'll need a tyvek hazmat suit to get that thing out of there.

Really dependZ upon how fast it was plugged. It could last till the end of the season if he got to it fast enough.

We had one we covered....with dual layers....and it had no mush to it....

Remember the ICEBREAKER?.... IceMan haZ never been the same....haZnt grown since.....lol

I use silicone on mine. It either sealed out the bad stuff or it sealed it in. The small split was less than 6 hours old. I might wind up with a 400 lb stink bomb. LOL

Had one last year. Used Captan mixed with a little water into a thick paste and painted it on. I got about two more weeks growth (about 220lbs for an est. of 633) on her before the split opened wide and finished her off. No sign of mushiness and my brother's pigs ate on the thing for four days. BCG tell your friend to keep her going, even if only for the experience.

I had a blossom end split 13 days ago now that went into the cavity. I didn't get it plugged up until the next day and it still is growing slowly and looks good. Chances are it will be a pile of mush soon as orangeneck says, but you never know.

85 degrees during the day, 60 degrees at night, complete with thunderstorms every night. This has gone on for about a week now. Woke up this morning to BES. Its about 3 inches long, brand new, and the toothpick goes all the way in. Silicone caulk is going on today. Caulk it, or cut it off? If I cut it off, I got nothin, If I caulk it, I got a few days left to just look at it. Looks like I will be renting the tiller early this year. It sure has been fun though. The 1610 has been an amazing plant. I just wish it did not split so easily. The main vine split three times, the secondaries split and some of them cracked, even some of the tendrils had splits. The flowers were all deformed and the pumpkins were also deformed. Throughout all of this, the plant continued to grow. I have one pumpkin left on this plant. It is on the first secondary. It seems so strange that the entire 32 feet of plant is in front of this pumpkin. And by the way, that first secondary that its on has a major split in it. I have renamed my plant, the 1610 splitter.

I sealed up the split with the captan paste yesterday.
walked out this morning to a new split. this one is even bigger. the one that I sealed up also got bigger and opened up again. So, now I have two huge BES`s.
I am going to go downstairs to the basement and get whatever I can find in a caulking tube to fill up the two splits. Tomorrow I will go back down to the basement and get the hand saw.

It turns out that the two splits were actually connected. They somehow became one very long split that runs right through the button. This pumpkin is officially done.
