Your best bet for a large fruit that I've been taught is to set the fruit on the main vine (and no closer than 10 foot). This allows the fruit the most available water and nutrients and being at least 10 foot out helps to have enough green behind the plant to also provide the energy needed for the fruit to develop. I myself am gunning for a fruit set at about 12 to 14 feet as I believe this to be the ideal "sweet spot" for fruit development. That's just my 2 cents...hope it helps ya and good luck!!! Erik

I think we are learning more and more information to suggest that it does not matter as much as was first thought. Some really big ones grown on sides. My PB (1030) was grown on a secondary main and my second best (990) was grown on a secondary with a real late pollination (July 21) after loosing 2 others to splits. I even gave up on the plant and just let it grow.....Until I noticed it was getting really big. lol

Funny that plants can do so well without us. It would seem that it is easy for us to have a detrimental affect on out plants with our constant tinkering. Its a fine line isnt it!
