Hi all,
About a week ago I accidently broke off my first secondary. Now I noticed that where it joined the main it has become slimey and brown. How should I go about treating this spot and is there a way to prevent it from happening again?
Thanks,
Ben

Hopefully someone with more experience will jump in here, but to start I would cut away slimey tissue, spray with 6% peroxide, dust/paint it with some kind of fungicide, (captan, sulphur, daconil) put a fan blowing on it, and set a table or something over it to keep rain off.

If it has liquid coming out if it then you might be dealing with a rotting stump. Pics are always good when people are trying to give advice.

Good Luck!

I dont think its into the stump/main vine yet, but want to prevent it from happening. I just then scraped away the brown slimey bits and cleared the area to help air flow. Will dust it with fungicide and cover the stump area. at the moment I am misting often due to 32degree C heat.
I should start a grower diary because ive kept notes and photos all the time. will get someone to teach me how asap(I struggle with computers)
Thanks for the help,
Ben

I would spray with something that will kill bacteria, fungicide will not do that. Peroxide or rubbing alcohol work well and I have heard some use 10% bleach, but I'm not sure I would use that unless I didn't have anything else.
To start a diary (or add to it) just go the the grower's diary link on top left of homepage, then click the link on the right near the top that says "Submit to Your Own Diary" or copy and paste this in your browser

http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiarySubmitForm.asp

Then browse to a place where you saved your picture and type your entry. (Posts with pictures don't get posted immediately -- usually within a couple of hours -- and the pictures can't be really large, less than 4Meg).

You could put some clear plastic/wood sticks over the area to keep the rain off and let the sun through. If its not rot it should heal and dry up in three days/if its rotting there your screwed.

i had 4 small white patio plastic tables over 4 different main vine/secondary vine junctions on my 991 due to fissuring sections that would collect water when misting or watering. clean them as everyone stated above, dry them out and heal them. dust them again with a powder like captan. reclean and re-heal the areas all season. try to make sure they do not get wet the rest of the season if possible. 2 small tables side by side with a fan under one and a tarp draped over both side by side tables is a nice set up for keeping dry and fanning directly on wounded cleaned area.

Thank you all very much, I cleaned up the area with peroxide, reapplied fungicide dust and covered the stump.
I have finally started a diary, it wasnt that hard after all. I wasnt able to get a picture of the slimey bit because it was under the vine in a hard to get to spot.
However it does seem to be drying up and not spreading.
Thanks again
Ben
