Marvelous Mable comes home today and Id like to collect the seed. Shes been off the vine 6 days now, but I dont know if that matters. Mable is 62 days old is that old enough to have mature seed? Also other than washing them in a bleach solution and putting them on a screen to dry is there anything else I should do? Id appreciate any tips or advice :) Tammy

(speaking with only a few years exp) I keep a fan on mine and stir them maybe 3 times a day for 2-3 weeks, they can get moldy, dark if you don't.

62 days should be plenty of time to mature seeds.

Germination in the fruit happens in alot of different veggies its normal if the seeds are kept in the fruit a little too long.

Tammy run some air across them(a small fan)as they dry.the faster the outisde of the shell dries the less mould you'll have

Tammy - those darker seeds are probably hollow. squeeze them and you'll probably notice they're a little too flexible.

I asked a similar question about mature seeds before and someone (can't remember who, sorry) said that a Pumpkin needs to make it past 34 days minimum before the seeds become viable. So your seeds should be wonderfully fine. Those that have sprouted were just because they were inside the pumpkin for a little too long.
Tammy, what a wonderful Diary you have. I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed it. Congratulations on your big one.

I'm trying to decide what I want to grow next year. I'm growing only giant marrow this year with a couple growing almost 2" a day but I'm not sure I want to grow these next year or not. I'm leaning towards giant greenies or some orange with good genetics for my first pumpkin. I have been following Tammy's diary since day 1 this year and if I'm growing a pumpkin next year I want one of Tammy's seeds! :)

Didn't the 723 Bobier have white tips? Nothing wrong with that. Just bounce test the seeds before you toss them solely on appearance. You get a pretty good feel after a while for what's viable and what isn't. The hollow ones generate a pretty distinct sound when they hit the table.

I had a some seeds literally fly away today! I was flipping them in front of the fan to blow away the 'skins' and a couple seeds flew away with the skins LOL I assumed those were hollow and tossed them. They were not white tipped though and you're right Nilbert. The more I look at them and get more familiar with them Im beginning to see which ones just dont seem 'right'
Thanks Tuck and good luck with your pumpkin! hope you get a record breaker :) I'll give you a yell when the seeds are ready.

Tammy, you are now moving into the second realm, of goodness, from this Insanity!!! Do you think, w/a nicer Spring, equal or better seeds?, more consistant weather conditions, w/less wind, connected w/ yer knowledge gained this year? You growin a 1K# Slunger next year??? LOL I HOPE YOU R THINKIN SO!!!! Peace, Wayne PS...Hope yer husband is up for it!!! LOL

LOL Wayne I doubt 1K is anywhere in my near future but I sure do think/dream about it! My goal for next season is to have something worthy of the Bear Wallow weigh off :) If only weather, soil and seed will cooperate! lol Tammy
