I have a couple of taps on both sides of the fruit(70lbs) . The vine is pretty tight to the ground and I'm worried about stem stress . do I cut the taps close to the pumpkin to free the vines up?

also , I notice are if the male flowers are left to fall off ...as they decay they get PM ...so i have been removing them, could this be why many growers have PM issues? or does everyone remove there dead flowers?

i just measured.. CC 69" and ott 160" i guess this puts me around 100lbs , the plant is big and I have culled all the pumpkins except the 100# and whats coming out daily. should I keep culling or can I grow more than one "record" on one plant?

i cut 2-3 tap roots on either side of the pumpkin, and more if it needs it. as for the male flowers, i cut them all off before they open up. the yellow color attracts cuke beetles.

Pgist...cutting tap roots b/4 and after is essential, if you don't want yer pkn to rip loose from the vine!!! Ramp the vines up and back down w/ some kind of support!!! Styrofoam blocks work well!!! Do this slowly, during the heat of the day (vines more pliable). The vine at the stem needs to stay the same heighth, to prevent stress!!! Hope this helps!! Peace, Wayne

ya ,cut them as you need to to allow the main to go up with the pumpkin, make sure to put something under it for support.

Pknologist, yes one per plant. Don't take that as "carved in stone" type of statement. There are instances of two over 1K on the same plant...sorta rare, but true!!! For maximum potential, one per plant (once you are positive it is gonna grow) seems to be the path of choice!!! PS...Gritch sorta nailed it on the male flower deal, once a pkn is pollinated, and males are no longer needed, esp, if you are having PM issues, or cuke beetle issues... remove them as soon as you see them...if you have the time, and energy to do so!!! Peace, Wayne

I cut my tap roots a couple on each side. Then I put the styrofoam pool noodles under the vines and it seems to work well and they keep the vine at the same level as the stem of the pumpkin.
