I planted my seed, finally it sprouted and I had about 5" of plant, a few true leaves, everything looked good, healthy green. I gave it about 10 ounces of water and the next day it was wilted down to the ground and never recovered.
Any ideas what went on? I'm going to try again but don't want to do whatever I did wrong again.
Thanks! Tess

Is it in a big pot, extremely dry? if not 10 ounces is a lot of water to give a small plant, you could of drowned it.

The temp of the water may also have sent the seedling into shock, or any additives that may have been introduced with the water.

Something probably ate the roots.

It was out in the yard so not in a pot, but maybe it did drown. Thanks!

The same thing happened to my first two plants (earlier in the season). I'm sure I drowned them. Hopefully you have backups.

Well, I used the technique described in the site about chipping off the seed shell and germinating it in a wet paper towel. In 24 hours I got a nice root out of my 3 remaining seeds. Planted them today and we'll see how it goes. I'm not looking for a prize winner, so if there's anything that comes of them, I'll be happy for this year.

I have been putting up with this BS for years now. Been getting corn seed maggots eating everything from the seeds to the roots of small seedlings. They hit my corn, bean, sunflowers and okra.
