i understand no one can tell me exactly how i need to fertilize my garden with out further info of my dirt. I am going at this a little ignorant of gardening. I do know i was advised before season to put down a balanced 12-12-12 fert. but what i dont get is what the numbers mean. I mean what type of numbers should i be looking at for root and leaf growth. and what type for fruit production. Now that you have stopped laughing at cluelessness I would thank you for some knowledge

N-P-K
N is nitrogen and that is for foilage...
P is Phosphate thats for roots,,,,,
K is potash that is for the fruit growth,,,,

As Josiah mentioned the 3 numbers stand for N-P-K the 12-12-12 means that for every 100 pounds of fertilizer there is 12 pound of nitrogen, 12 pounds of phosphate,12pounds of potash. Understanding this is useful if you have recommendations for amending your soil with fertilizer.

the numbers are indicative of the % of that nutrient in the fertilizer.
No one should be laughing, we all have to start from the begining and anyone that claims to know it all, be very apprehensive of that person.
