I have weeds, or little blades of grass popping up everywhere in the patch. Any suggestions? Or am I pulling each by hand?

I am by no means an expert on weeds. I have the same problem every year with little tiny weeds that pop up all over my patch. after reading many posts on this board about weeds, I determined that the most popular weed solution is a tool called a stirrup hoe. Also sometimes called an action hoe. I got mine at Lowes a few days ago for 15 bucks. It really works great and so far I have absolutely no weeds. Homer has them to for the same price.

round-up.........just don't spray the leaves of the pumpkin plant....spraying the vine is ok.....no worries

Mulch is ok if you don't get it too thick. Grass clippings from a lawn that has not been treated for weeds or straw- oat, wheat or rye. Mulch helps hold in moisture in a dry year but can get fungus proglems started in a wet year or if it is put on too thick. Even with mulch you will have some weeds to pull.

I hoe'd the patch yesterday with a regular hoe. Very gently in a back and forth motion. I'm afraid of hitting roots though. I'm going to go to lowes and checkout the stirup hoe. Think I'm going to cover parts of it with straw too. I have a really bad back and that hoe'in was not what the doc ordered. Whatever it takes though will be done.

Don't spray any part of the plant with roundup! LOL if you spray the vine you will have a dead plant.

Watch the hoeing, I've seen some of my roots just below the surface and three to four feet out in each direction.

RichFig, I bought one of the stiup hoes. It works great in tilled soil with new growth weeds. I wish I would have found it along time ago. You can use it as push/pull, but if might still bother your back. I think its alot easier to pull it through the weeds but it wont be as fast. Save the hoe however, you'll find that it works better on larger more established weeds. The Lowes where I bought mine called it an action hoe. Hope this helps.
