Hello!
I bought a SVB trap (on extremepumpkinstore.com) and wanted to know when I should put it outside (I live in Mass). Also should I keep it a distance away from my patch (upwind, downwind) as to not attract them directly to my patch when they do come?
Thanks!

I've always viewed the SVB traps the same as I do japanese beetle traps. Everytime I use the beetle traps I end up with more beetles (most caught in the traps) but a lot on the roses than I do when I don't use them at all. My concern is attracting SVB that I may not have had otherwise. Even placing the trap away from the patch is still WAY to close for me! I've used heavy doses of Grub-ex in the patch the last couple years and seems to do well guarding against them and of course early preventive spraying of insecticides is a must.

Mark, I have to respectfully diagree with you, although it may attract SVB, it is killing scores of them, I have never seen swarms of SVB like we see Japanese Beetles. We also use systemics such as Merit, but are you reapplying the grub-x every 30 days to ensure that the plants remain treated?, most growers don't reapply merit every 30 days, and thats a water soluble drench to the root zone, Grub-x is far less potent and is a granular. We also use contacts such as Talstar and warrior, but wouldnt you feel safer knowing that at the end of the season there were approx 70 plus dead SVB's in the traps that you placed out side and less chance of them being on your plants laying eggs? Joe, Thanks, I apprecuiate it. Patrick, please shoot me an email, I will send you the placement files. I usually place mine right inbetween two plants that I grow back to back, about 3-4 ft high, hung from a green fence post. I use two in my approx 3000 sq ft area. Tom

I fight with SVBs every year in my summer squash. I'm using merit on the AGs and bought a trap to try and keep them off of the squash (about 300 ft away from the pumpkin patch). If it works well I will be purchasing a couple more. I'd much rather have them in the trap than on the plant.

"When to put outside?" Since the lure is cheap, I'd put them out now, regardless of plant size or weather.
Your plants are the primary attractant, not the lure in the trap (Tom's advice on placement is solid).
I "field tested" four SVB traps last summer, two in the patch and two in areas far away from my patch and neighboring gardens. The remote traps did not lure a singe SVB while the traps in my patch lured a total of 8.
The SVB traps also lured significant numbers of bumble bees and paper wasps so be careful when you open them! Matter of fact, if you use the "strips" in the bottom of the trap, there isn't a need to open the trap except to swap out lure.
Grub X will only kill the grubs in your patch. It has no affect on the SVB grubs that might exsist in the square mile around your patch.

Kudo's to Tom!!! and all who use these traps!!! I used em last year, (2 traps), and only caught a total of 7!!! I have never seen SVB's in my patch, and never seen any damage done to my vines by them. I will, however use the traps in my pkn patch again this year. Tom, can I still purchase just the lure strips? My traps are in good shape!!! Peace, Wayne
