In Dick's tips Pap said he used a cutworm band around the young plant. How tall does this band need to be (like 2" or more) and how deep?I like the idea of a "gated community" for my girls.

I'm guessing it's a band to keep out cutworms--in the book Pap suggests using a soft plastic flower pot and cutting a circular band from that.I killed many grubs while tilling and it sounds like good insurance.

We usually cut the top 1" out of a plastic butter container split it and place it around the seedling pressed flush with the soil. Ceeps cutworms from killing the seedlings.

i use soda bottles -- cutworms generally operate just at the soil surface, just make sure they are not inside the collar before you put it around the plant
