i've looked at the patterns here on this site but am unsure about something on the christmas tree. are all secondary vines that are not off of the main removed, or are the first couple secondary vines off the root considered the bottom "branches" of the tree even if they are not off the main vine?

the vines you are talking about are called tertiary vines or sucker vines these vines should all be removed so that you dont end up with a big mess

Some people will let the tertiaries grow back towards the edge of the patch to "back fill" on the first set of secondaries only. You will see this method using a modified "spider" pattern. All others must go!

I've read some growers let tertiaries back fill to keep a fruit from growing too rapidly. When pumpkin growth starts to slow, the tertiaries are then trimmed to divert more growing energy into the fruit.
