I am going to try again after several years of PPD(post pumpkin depresion.) I was crushed by whatever happened to my soil and couldn't grow a pumpkin whatever I tried that I "retired" for several years. I'm going to try 4 plants. Two in one patch and two in another. Can somebody guide me to the names of a few seeds that do well in central PA as far as climate? I guess I'm looking for a very hardy plant thats more tolerant of sun/heat stress. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

lots of great growers in the pa area. im sure some will offer seeds.

your soil and how you manage it will have much more to do with your results than any seed from any part of the country could ever do.most seeds do well if taken care of properly.

you need to ask yourself
what went wrong last time.?
how can i correct it from happening again?

if you dont know this you may be disapointed a second time as well.

thanks pap, problem is I'm not sure what went wrong. same thing for several years. the plants would start fine, then always "get sick", I think in july. I suspected a soil virus at the time, or some really bad imbalance.I still have some local seeds that I'm sure are fine. I'm certainly going to sit in on the PGPGA auction, I used to love that!

It's possible that cucumber beetles are part of your problem. The little buggers transmit bacterial wilt disease along with chewing on your plants. Start with pap's hints for good soil, plant your seedlings, control insects(listen to pap), water, weed. By the way, Amy, it took me 2 years to find out how to sprout seeds consistently and find out my pumpkins were rotting from the inside because of holes in the stumps. Believe me, I went into a deep funk with every dead pumpkin, but I recovered and vowed that I would become a better grower. C'mon spring!!!

Amy I'm not sure how fare you are from canfield Ohio but are club has a beginners seminar Feb 13 and are winter meeting March 20th. We will be going over every thing at are meetings from start to finish and there will be some of the best growers in the world you could talk to to get any info on soil problems to fungicides to insecticides and seeds.
