Are there growers out there using moisture meters like the ones Steve d. Uses? If so, what ones are recommended? And where is the best place to buy them? They stay in the soil,right?

I don't use them for the pumpkin patch but rather for raised bed and container gardening. That being said, they would work just fine and give you a reading in a few minutes.
