Is it a waste of good humic and kelp to apply it in the fall, as well as the spring?

When I spade up poor soil for a new patch, I add humics to the patch in autumn and in spring. But when you work with the rotor tiller and already have more then 5% OM, you will add humics before set out for a better root development and later again sometimes to the plants. When you add citric acid to the humics in fertigation (late spring and summer), you will have more CO2 for the best work of pumpkin´s foliage. Kelp is not so riky to add in fall as mineral fertilizers with nitrogen are, cause here you have not N but aminos, and they are covered with mannitol and alginic acids. It might be good for early plant growth, when you add kelp in autumn, if you use a high quality product like Holland´s 1-0-6: potassium is better mixed in with tillage. You don´t have to fear eluviation, when K is covered in the soil with kelp.

Hey Steve, I'm not sure you got what you were looking for in this forum so I thought I'd add to it.

I always add granular humic acid in the fall just before laying down my cover crop. The granular stuff takes longer to break down and I've been told it helps the cover crop and over all wintering of the patch.

Kelp meal is pretty expensive and I'd save that for your spring patch ammendments, along with another application of granular humic.
