I understand that nitrates/nitrogen leaches from the soil rather quickly. If I apply today, how long should I expect the nitrogen to be in the soil? Are we talking a week or two, or will this application make it through the growing season?

Hands on, if you need nitrogen try some 28-0-0 , farmers side dress field corn with it. Urea don't last long if you have a lot of organic matter, it will break down fast. Silaged chicken manure is better than fresh, not as hot!

Calicum Nitrate is a great source of early season nitrogen, I would figure about 3-4 weeks before it is gone, reapply again if needed

I vote for the 30-0-0 Tom Privitera sells. Results within a week.

If you use calcium nitrate mid season do not broadcast it near a vine or use it near a buried vines. If you use it dissolve it in water first. I lost a few side vines to fungus last year after I applied to much near a buried vine, I probably would have beat my PB if I had not done that.

Josh- Several soil guys have told me that the nitrate form of nitrogen is more readily used by pumpkins, plants in general. We cannot go wrong with a little more calcium in the patch. This is why I prefer CaNo3. As far as the chickens go, I have 25 working for me this year. That will happen next year.

many hydroponic growers use calcium nitrate in their irrigation water. it allows them to administer the amount needed, when its needed. it can be applied at different levels at different stages of plant development.
most plants do use nitrate nitrogen more readily than other forms (blueberries are an exception). The same cannot be said for soil microbes. There are both generalist and specialist soil organisims that will convert nitrite or ammonium into nitrate that the plants then utilize. A mix of nitrogen sources tends to give you a longer nitrogen availability curve from one application.

Amelio, Hot chicken manure means fresh manure, high in nitrogen, hence the term HOT.

Calcium Nitrate is great for early season when the soil is cool. Your transplants never slow down. Scatter out from plant about three feet. Then go back to blood meal after soil warms up.
