Ok, I struck out on the general discussion and soil prep boards, so I thought I'd try this one as a last resort. So, here goes:
According to my fall soil report, my potassium base saturation is on the high side (9.7 %). My Mg% is 19.4 and Ca% is 70.8 with a pH of 7.0. I was planning on adding 50 lbs. of gypsum per 1000 square ft. next spring. I heard kelp meal is high in potassium. Since I'm already high in potassium, would I be better off just using alfalfa meal instead of kelp meal? Thanks, Charlie

I would hate to see three strikes on this deal. So I like your current base saturation levels, very similar to mine in the fall of 2008. I would add both the seaweed and alfalfa meal in the spring. The fertilizer value of each is relatively low, but will benefit the soil with minor minerals, amino acids, and overall condition of the soil. You would have to add alot of kelp to see that percent base saturation change.

Thanks Chad and Dan. You've convinced me to add kelp meal along with the alfalfa meal next spring. Hope you both go huge in 2010!(pumpkins that is, not you personally, lol)
