Where I can get space to grow in the uk is not fed by a mains water supply. Instead we have shallow wells with hand pumps. I recon I have the time to pump 100 gallons per week. Possibly twice this in peak times. Is this enough for two plants or should I go with one?

This is of course going to depend on the amount of rainfall you get. But many of the "heavy hitters" report using 70 to 80 gallons a day per plant during dry periods without help from rain fall. Since you can t control weather, this is what you should base your decisons on.
What about an electric water pump to draw from the well? They are as cheap as $45 and can pump 300 gallons an hour. Can get much greater then that but not really needed. But would have to watch the head hieght.

Thanks for the response. The area I have is allotment land (I don't know what the American terminology is) and it has no electricity. I'll seriously consider a petrol powered pump. These go for about $200 over here so not cheap.

It might be cheaper to go for a 12v pump out of a caravan or narrow boat? they can put out quite a bit and you just keep recharging a car battery.
