Just wondering how quickly Alfalfa meal will break down. I understand it genertates root killing heat on decompostion but I dont know how long this root killing heat last before the bacteria eat it up.
Maybe a simpler way to ask my question is after applying 3lb/100 sq ft of alfalfa meal (mixed into aged cow manure) how long do I have to wait to plant my seedling pumpkins?

I think it depends on your weather and how often you turn your pile. I live where it is hot and I turn my pile every few days. Since I am feeding alfalfa hay to my animals I always have lots of alfalfa to put in the pile. Mine is not meal but it breaks down fast because it heats up so well. You will know when it is safe to use. Your moist pile will not heat up anymore when it is turned. For me aged manure still gets hot until it has been composted well. You can't tell by looking.
