hi cook my thought is --blankets or towels work like a oil lamp wick-- they draw most of water and cal up off the pumpkin--the spraying gets into every nook and crack and i havent had a pumpkin split or rot in 15 years since ive started---craig

i agree with craig. how would you like to walk around all day under a wet blanket. calcium blankets have been proven to do nothing. an occasional spray or better yet keeping the levels up in your soil will do better for you.

I would think that with a soaked blanket lying on a pumpkin would be begging for bacterial or fungal infections. I have a greenhouse, and one of the things that I use to keep infections from setting in in to use fans for air movement. This prevents stagnant, moisture laden air to become a breeding ground for trouble. Laying a wet blanket on the pumpkin to me, would be worse than not using the fan in the greenhouse, since there would be no air movement what so ever. Just my two cents KathyT

Oyster shell is a great inexpensive way to augment for Calcium however it is reported to have a high alkaline content which is not good if one needs to lower the soils PH, like in Colorado. Same thing I would assume for chicken egg shells since the farmers feed them oyster shell to strenghten their shells.......

Oyster shell are bad news for your soils pH. Yes there high in calcium but, they will raise the heck out of your soils pH. I found that out myself. I used them two years in a row. My soil went up to 7.8. Dwaine Gipe was the one who figured out why my pH kept getting higher and higher. Stick with gypsum
