Going Green

I am thrilled with the seeds from 32 of our 50 growers that are received so far. Just a little bit of most everything. Quite a variety! Some from Germany and France have said they were going to participate and I am excited about what they said they were sending. Only two decided they did not have the seeds to participate this year but there is always Exotic Seed Exchange 2015 so plant knowing you need 50 to 150 packs to, send next year! Several of our growers were very kind and sent 50 of this and 50 of that! On ebay I have been able to buy 1000 zip lock bags 1 x 1 or 1.5 x 2 with free shipping for 5.98! Plan what your going to grow in 2015 so you know what your going to send in fall of 2015. Anyone growing Giant Beetroot or Giant Cabbage or Giant carrots. Cotton or Tobacco are a thought!

Just remember that yard long beans are not beans, but peas and cannot be entered into competition. Also make sure your beets are beets and not mangels and your turnips are turnips and not rutabaga/swede. Several problems with these categories over the years.

That is good to know! Great vegetables for growing but as Dutch Brad has pointed out not for competition. Personally there are lots of things I grow for fun and not for competition like Alaskan Caribou Cucumbers which everyone in the exotic seed exchange will get seeds from this year!

Doctors at the London hospital which will be treating the British Ebola patient were asked what dietary facility's were in place, doctors said he would have toast in the morning, cheese on toast for lunch and jam on toast for tea, the doctors were asked if toast would help in his treatment, doctors said no, it's the only thing we can slide under the door.

Plansky and Swain your seeds arrived. I spent hours sorting all the seeds last night and putting them in Bubbles. Added the other seeds I got today to the bubbles. There are over 70 packs! Everyone will enjoy the variety!

12/11/2014 7:11:36 PM

Pumpkin Farm

Going Green

For next year I would suggest some changes! First off there is no sense sending a bubble mailer! It simply takes up room and costs you more to send out because of weight. Secondly I would suggest that we make it 55 packs even though we will limit it to 50 growers. This is because some of you miscounted and sent only forty five packs! Thirdly all packs must have the same seeds in them. I don't know how to distribute 15 cantaloupe, 10 field pumpkin and 25 tomato seeds. All seed packs should be of the same variety of vegetable so that your fellow growers get the seeds they want. Forth...some people put 5 different seeds in a coin mailer but didn't label what they are. Although it was great that all 50 packs had the same in each pack if would be nice if they were labeled. Fifth...some sent poisonous plants and seeds. Please keep all seeds out of your mouth and do not plant them if you fear your Children or pets will get poisoned if they chew on the plant or seeds! If you are in doubt check it out on the internet or dispose of seeds properly! Better less seeds than a dead child or pet!

Sixth....I loved doing the exchange for all of us and want to do it again next year! You have all been very gracious and I do not mean to offend by listing these suggestions here! I sent off one email which the grower took offense and I apologize because I was wrong in doing so. Many growers sent 50 packs of tomato seeds another 50 packs of field pumpkin and another 50 of Long Gourds and so on! You are very generous and I wish to say thank you to you for your generosity! This has been a wonderful experience and I thank all of you for your participation. I will be allowing a little time to see if any more come but I think we have all the participants in!

Have a Merry Christmas-love to all! This was great fun!

You know who the real hero is here! It is Linus Van Pelt of Menomonie, Wisconsin who started and completed the seed exchange for years! Linus I want to thank you for having started the seed exchange. Any success is your success! This was a great year of seed exchange and so many of you were very generous! Many growers sent 100-150 packs and some sent extra money for postage! As Linus said packages to Canada and some European Countries cost 8-10 dollars! Everyone should send Linus a big THANK YOU!

There are quite a few AG seeds in the exchange and I am wanting to know more about them. I looked for Diary entries but don't know most of your usernames. Farming- a bunch of catastrophies that result in a lifestyle

Kc, yup, "groovy". What a stellar little plant. Throws SUPER Orange!!! No splits, doesn't succumb to disease at the drop of the hat...really can't say enough good about that one. If you don't get in seed exchange, let me know, got tons of seed from it.

LB has a great Orange pumpkin and it is almost 100 pounds bigger than others. The seeds in the exchange from the 108 House to the 9fourty1 squash...There are so many tremendous Ag's Pumpkins and squash! Thank you Kieth from KC for those wonderful peppers! The Broulliard 2009 Wallace x 1789 Wallace is going to be a big winner this year. Everyone wants the 2009 and the 1789 Wallace is called "The Freak" and is said to be an easy pumpkin to grow with big results!

It is so hard to single out the best seed because there are so many. Great tomato, long gourd, bushel gourd, tall corn, sunflower and marrow! This is a great collection. Thank you all!

Phil,
Thanks for all the work you did for this exchange. Now I am going to have to sit by the mailbox and wait for them to come. going to put the box under the Christmas tree so I have something exciting to open besides socks and underwear on Christmas morning. lol

When you get my age socks and underwear are all you need! Now that we are done with the exchange I have decided to build a twenty six by twenty Party Shack! We are going to have it available for birthdays holidays etc. here on the farm! Family is important and my bigpumpkin family is also! I wish all of you the very best Christmas ever! First thing this morning when I woke, I thought let's get out the seeds and sort them and then realized that I would have more time later after the Party Shack was built. Then I could spread out and sort seeds and decide for the twentieth time what I was going to plant and where I was going to plant them!

The 173 Wellington Field pumpkin was grown from a field pumpkin I bought from the Amish. I do not have any genetics. I planted seeds and it was open pollination with only Amish field pumpkin growing and it turned out 173 Pounds!

Opened my bubble this morning and had a great time looking at each package and categorizing them into piles. If anyone wants more field pumpkin seeds I have a lot of different crosses ( about 30) from this year beside the 104. You can see several of them in my diary -- ag teacher -. Email me if interested.-- Joe

Has anyone put together a listing of what is in the package? There is way more here than I can possibly ever grow and I'd really like to see these seeds hit dirt. As such I'd like to offer some up to friends and family. Being lazy I'm hoping someone has already cataloged them and can just send me the list.
