Here is the result of early pumpkin positioning can be seen. The main vine is initially supported with a pool noodle on each side of the pumpkin and then there is a fan going from pollination to harvest. Getting the pumpkin to lay and develop the initial bottom flat spot when the pumpkin is level is critical. This can take some fine-tuning adjustments early on, but when done correctly this can be the result which reduces the chance/need to move the pumpkin away from the vine later in the season as it grows.
The positioning of the pumpkin in the near center of the plywood is also helpful for later in the season. It allows a firm and flat surface for the fan and helps eliminate the chance of soil contact with the pumpkin. Overall, it just helps maintain a clean area around the pumpkin.
