HERE IS WHAT YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW !! Do you really need the main vine at its base to grow a big pumpkin? Apparently not. I debrided all the dead material from the ground to past the first secondaries, resulting in 4 stumps. The kin 25 ft out with 23 buried secondaries, each with about 10 or more single or double roots emanating from that many buried nodes can still grow at almost 20 lbs/day. Hmmm – now that I write this and look at the picture again, I can probably rip out those big beautiful first secondaries – they’re not attached to anything!
