I happened to look out the window to see my daughters cats sitting in the shade two days ago with their mouths wide open...Heat index was @ 108 F with 98% Humidity. I went out to get them and Stella Pictured, couldn't move very well so I knew she was seriously over heated. She is a Long Haired Tortious Shell Maincoon. She was pretty much lathargic and needed cooling off fast. I cut most of her hair off with scissors, as you can see in the pic, cooled her off with water and a fan. It will all grow back fine and she is doing much better now. The vet told me they would have done basically the same thing. Yes I had to leave that bushy part on the tail, lol. They had water but still the heat can get your animals fast and unexpectedly.
