Since I didn't post much last year, this was the best to come out of my patch @ 237 lbs. With the exception of another 183 lbs one (open pollinated) everything else split on me so it wasn't a good year for seed saving either.... Onward an upward, a new season begins. With there no longer being a later show in Southampton I decided to plant my marrow seeds a whole 6 days earlier than normal (26th may) as Malvern always seems just a few days to early for me. Aiming for 1st of August fruit sets (or as close to) which will give me 8 full weeks untill Malvern.

Plants aren't doing too bad on the whole, it's been quite windy here on and off for weeks and we've taken some damage from birds.

Well....the marrow went down.

Split came on the underside

So no WR or PB for me this year but this year has been my best ever regardless. I genuinely feel that I had and lost three marrows that would have had a shot at the WR. This one wasn't overly long but measured 75 inches around the middle.

Unfortunately it opened up on the underside like the other one

I also think this one wouldn't have been too far short either but a stem split done this one
Saturday, September 27 View Page
This one was far longer than any marrow I've grown before at 63 inches long. Unfortunately going down to a stem split.

So after taking some heavy losses and a week before malvern I fould myself down to my last two sound marrows and a third one which had deep cracks at the blossom end. At this point like I've done before I removed the one with cracks and the smaller of the two sound marrows to ensure I would have a legitimate entry for Malvern, gambling the larger one. Luckily for me the gamble paid off and I got this beauty to the weigh off sound.

A couple of weeks ago before it split on me I asked Sebastian if GWR would recognise a new long marrow record as at 63 inches long I was fairly sure I had the longest marrow ever grown on my hands so why not. Unfortunately the marrow went down to a stem split so I thought no more about it so I was surprised when I was informed that my marrow was verified as being the WR for the longest. Not the longest ever grown but the first to make a claim for it. Thank you to Sebastian and GWR for making this happen and going forward if anyone's got one longer than 1.454 m make sure you get it verified.

My son Jack also took a marrow to the show. His weighed 92.5 kg or 203 lbs. He grew it himself too!
